[17:37:03] Dadrobit They're only paying for like 1/6th the timber cost for the build because their adjuster found that while the whole house was in fact on fire, because the wood left standing had less than a quarter inch deep charring, it was still "good enough"

[17:37:58] Dadrobit They wanted to just slather some epoxy on the timber to seal it and call it a job well done.

[18:11:59] AbstractIndigo I actually had that happen once at my folks' place. My dad started the wood burner at 2AM or whatever, and I was up and caught a faint whiff. Since I wasn't expecting him to start a fire in the middle of the night, I genuinely worried a fire had started.

[19:29:41] Dadrobit The price difference between the amount of sealant and labor needed would have been minimal, so the contractor opted to just eat the difference assuming StateFarm would still pay. But they're not and now there's 10's of thousands of dollars up in the air.
